WOW! When did you kids become such amazing literary analysts and poets? I'm impressed! I'm actually so impressed that I really think we should take a moment to read some of the comments made by your friends. Let's make that part of Blog Assignment #2. Here you go...
#1. First, choose one or two comments from the previous blog assignment. Write the author(s) of that comment a note -- a positive, classroom-appropriate note -- such as:
Hi Suzy Q! I really enjoyed your poem! I like the creative way you used your dinner table to symbolically represent the strong relationship you have with your family.
#2. The Secret Life of Bees Chapter 3: The epigram at the beginning of Chapter 3 reads, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57). After reading the chapter, write 3-4 well-developed sentences explaining your answer to the following questions:
Why does the author choose to begin the chapter with this message?
How does the epigram relate to the chapter?
Note: I urge you, again, to view this blog as a virtual classroom. Diction, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and development of ideas should be considered carefully for this academic forum. Points will be deducted for an absence of these conventions.
Type up your response for both #1 and #2 in a ONE comment to this post (no need for separate comments). Do not forget to include your first and last name!
Happy Blogging!

ReplyDeleteGood job Katie Shackelford, I really liked prose paragraph on the teddy bears.
Sue Monk Kidd starts the chapter with this epigram because Lily is trying to find a person who once knew her mother. So Lily would be the new bee keeper and she's trying to find one of the "attendants" in Tiburon. So she finds August Boatwright who will lead her to the "queen" (information about her mother).

Hey Kersten K! I loved your poem! I loved the way your described a volleyball as your hopes and joys for the future, I thought it was very creative!
I believe the author, Sue Monk Kidd chose to begin with the quote, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first location her circle of attendants," because it implies that one must search for the reward. Lily has come all the way from Silvan to find someone who might of known her mother this all leads to her finding the brand of honey with the black virgin Mary on the front. All of this relates to the quote because it shows how Lily, the "new beekeeper," has to hunt for some more information on her mother, who is the "elusive queen."

ReplyDeleteMadison Wolbert,
Your comment to the last blog was great! In your poem i love how you went in depth with your details. The way you described the House on Mango Street was just how i would have done and i like that you really thought about the chapter.
Courtney Ensch,
Your blog was great also! You went sentence per sentence for the first part about the tall and skinny trees, and that made it more helpful. The poem was fantastic! I loved how you made sure that you put down each and everything you possibly could about the light bulb.
The quote about the bees helped me to realize that Lilly's life is like the bees life. That she quotes that in the begginning of the chapter makes you think about it throught the rest and helps you to put what she meant by it with what you are reading.
Madison Hayes,
ReplyDeleteI love the amount of detail you put into the thought of the tan curtains. You want further than I ever would have. It makes me think more about the colors of every thing around me.
Lily is searching for anything she can about the life of her mother, and about the only idems she has left of hers. Lily looking for memories of her mother is like the bee keeper looking for the queen bee.

I thought you did a really good job. And I used personification too. We used one of the same quotes. It was the one about the tulips over the vase, I think. Cool!
Morgan Cunninghm,
I think you were really smart in getting to the point. Your response was short and sweet. Sometimes that's hard for me to do. You were smart and accurate. Great work!
Kidd chose to begin Chapter 3 with a unique message because it gives a preview of the chapter. It is also there because in reality it's true. In order to find somebody, you should look where they hang out or where their friends are.
It is related to the chapter because Lily was going to try to find some information about her mother. On the back of the Mary picture, it had a town listed. Later in the chapter, Lily finds the same picture on a honey jar. So now, she and Rosaleen are on their way to meet the girl who made the honey.

ReplyDeleteconner lane your poem was excellent! it really gets to the person to understand that everything and everyone is unique in their own way.
Sue monk kidd chose to start out like that to show that lilly is trying to find a person that knows her mother. Also that lillys life is adventorous like a bee.
Morgan Cunningham
ReplyDeleteGood job Veronica, I really liked how you described the wall.
I believe the author, Sue Monk Kidd chose to begin with the quote, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first location her circle of attendants," because Lily is trying to find her mother. Like the beekeepers need to find other worker bees before they can find the queen, Lily needs to find someone who used to know her mother before she can find information on her mother.

ReplyDeleteMadison Hayes,
I really like your peom about tan curtains. It was creative of you to make them represent your parents. Also, I liked the fact that you changed it up by beginning with the curtains being boring and then stating that they "cracked" open sometimes for you to see the joyful events on the other side.
Sue Monk Kidd begins with the quote "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" to give the idea that Lilly has to begin her search for her mother's past by following the steps of her mother. She finds the honey jars with a black Virgin Mary on the front of it which matches the picture she has. This leads her to the beekeeper that her mother might have known.
Sophie Groff-
ReplyDeleteI love the very detailed descriptions of your poem about flowers. I love how you describe how the flower's lives were created and how they live throughout their lifteime. Also, how they apply to your life and how when the flowers grow you will grow and be able to live.
Kersten Kober-
I love your poem, the way you apply a volleyball to your life and how you have goals and dreams with that volleyball. It was very descriptive and meaningful!
Sue Monk Kidd uses this epigram to show that in this chapter, Lily is on a journey to find people who knew her mother and really find out who she was. Lily, who is the "bee keeper" in this epigram, had made the effort to go that far away from home to find people and she searched hard to find one of the "attendants" for information about the "elusive queen" which is Lily's mother. The beekeeper may face struggles to find the elusive queen and needs some help from attendants to find that queen. The epigram explains the chapter of Lily's journey to find the answers to her elusive queen.

Hey Spencer Santora, I really like your prose poem of your dogs. I thought it was very interesting how you did the opposite of your pets. GOOD JOB!
ReplyDeleteSue Monk Kidd started this chapter with this epigram because she wants to remind us that although a leader is important, the followers are just as important. The queen bee is said to be the most important, but without its workers, the queen is just as ordinary as any other bees. This epigram relates to the chapter because Lily finds out they picture of the black Mary belongs to August Boatwright. She also finds out August is a beekeeper.

ReplyDeleteRyan Murray, I loved your blog. It was very interesing how you compared the piano keys to your life. I espeacialy loved the part about the peanut butter and jelly. I laughed out loud about that.
The author started chapter 3 off with that quote beccause it sums up what would happen in the chapter in relation to the bees. This relates to the chapter because Lily needed to find out information and put together the clues about her mom. For example, the picture of the black Virgin Mary was cut from a Black Madonna Honey label. Once she found that it led her to August Boatright. This all in all may help her find clues about her "elusive" mom.
Hey Allie Bridges, I loved your poem! I thought the part where you said they never miss a beat was a very creative line and had good symbolic meaning.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter three, Sue Monk Kidd begins the chapter off with the quote, “New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants”. She uses this quote as a symbolic way of foreshadowing what will not only happen in chapter three, but also gives hints of what might come. When Lily and Rosaleen stop at an old, torn-down general store Lily meets a man who tells her about the picture of the colored Virgin Mary woman on the honey jar. He tells Lily that the lady’s name is August Boatwright and where she could find her. August is symbolically one of the “attendants”, who will lead her to the elusive queen, which is Lily’s mom, Deborah.

1. To Courtney Ensch, I really liked your poem about the lamps and their shade. It was symbolic of maturing and changing. I liked the idea of the bulbs burning out representing a new part of ones life.
2. Lily is trying to find some sort of connection to her mother, and in this chapter she goes to Tiburon because of a picture with the city scribed on the back. She feels like she may find something or someone that relates to her mother. This is representative of the epigram in which it states that one locates the queen bee by finding the rest of her workers first. That is just what Lily is attempting to do. Lily goes to Tiburon to find people that have seen or had some experience with her mother, so she can find the connection she is looking for.

ReplyDeleteBlake McIntyre,
I think you did a great job on your poem. I liked how you described the way that you view life at school using the flowers that you see all of the time at your house.
After I took a good look at the epigram at the beginning of chapter three i realized that the author put it there because it represents Lilies life at the time. It is the same way at the beginning of every chapter, but I was able to understand the epigram for this chapter more than the previous chapters. This relates to Lily because it is basically saying that the best way for her to get information about her mother is through her mothers friends, which is what Lily tries to do throughout the whole chapter.
Hey Kelly J! Your prose poetry was great! I love how you used your horse, a major part of your life, to symbolize you.
ReplyDeleteSue Monk Kidd used the quote to start out the chapter to foreshadow what Lily wants to accomplish. Throughout the chapter Lily focuses on finding background about her mother. The quote symbolizes that in order for Lily to find out more about her mother, she has to find people that once knew her. The "attendants" represent the people that once knew her mother and the "queen" represents her mother.

You did a great job identifying specific literary elements and used many parts of the actual passage. I completely agree with everything that you said.
Hayden Zier
Hayden, I liked the detail that you put into it and it seemed to me like you also put in a lot of effort. You did a good job to be sure that you cited your sources. I thought your poem was interesting and has a lot to do with your life.
The author chose to start the chapter with this epigram as a form of foreshadowing. All of the epigrams in the book have something to do with the plot. This epigram specifically relates to the chapter when it talks about "the way to find the elusive queen" (Kidd 57). By the queen I think that it is talking about the small town that they run into, and eventually August Boatwright, the woman who takes them in.
Kelly Joyner,
ReplyDeleteI think your blog was really good! You described your relationship with your horse really well and showed how much of a big part in your life he is. I love how in depth and personal it was!
The epigram is a good start to chapter three because it provides foreshadowing of the chapter. The quote symbolizes Lily's journey to learn more about her mother all while she discovers a picture of the black virgin, Mary, on jars of honey. Lily slowly starts to uncover things she had never known before in this chapter and meet new people which symbolize the word "attendants" in the epigram.

Madison Wolbert, your poem was awesome! I love how you show how the plastic fruit is trapped inside their plastic skin and cannot get out also how they are trapped in a ceramic bowl, sometimes how teenagers feel with their parents keeping them in their houses and restricting them from the things they long to do.
ReplyDeleteSue Monk Kidd decides to begin the chapter with this quote to foreshadow what the next two chapters will be about. Lily is like the new beekeeper who is trying to find the history of her mother, who would be the elusive queen. She travels to Tiburon, the town on the back of the postcard, to try to find someone who knew her mother. Lily goes and finds people who might know her mother in Tiburon. These people would be the attendants.

ReplyDeleteMadison hayes your poem about the tan curtains relating to paretns was good. The part about the crack in the curtains and how they will be open for a little bit but will close again was good.
The author chose to begin the chapter with this epigram because it shows that people have to look for things in life. It relates to the chapter because Lilly is the bee keeper looking for information about her mother (elusive bee). She does this by talking to the people of tiburon (attendents) who lead her to August boatwright the one who puts the Black virgin Mary on the honey jars. Also the one who might be able to give more information to Lilly about her mother.
1. Miss Gabby Cornish! I loved your prose poem over your life being like a story book. You did a great job.
ReplyDelete2. Sue Monk Kidd the auther of " The Sectret Life of Bees" uses a epigram "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" at the begining of chapter three to foreshadow what will happen in the chapter. The beekeeper in the epigram is sybolising Lily and the attendants are her finding her true family. Lily finds that she fits in with the Boatwright's and feels at home with them. Lily finds her attendants.

The quote about the bees is best summed up in these few words. The quote is used to express how Lilly's life is like the bee's life and she really has to search to find hope, and to also believe that someday she will break through. The qoute is also used to kind of guide you into the reading of the chapter and while reading, the quote at the beggining is foreshadowing events that are going to happen throughout the chapter. -GABBY CORNISH, BLOCK 3
ReplyDeleteHey Dalton, I can relate to your poem with regard to having a goal to keep trying. Good for you for already knowing where you want to go to college. Keep up the hard work.
ReplyDeleteKidd starts chapter three with this epigram because it is a good representation of what the characters actions will experience. This was Lily’s first time to run away from home so she was a “new beekeeper”. Lily and Rosaleen are walking their way to Tiburon because Lily is trying to find someone who knows her mother. This is represented by the “elusive queen” being the ultimate goal of the expedition. Lily needs to find “her circle of attendants” or people who will help her reach her ultimate goal. She has Rosaleen to accompany her and also the store helped her out. Lily was able to get a meal for both of them and was one step closer to her mother when she recognized the Black Mary picture on a honey jar. It is still questionable how successful Lily’s quest will turn out.

I think the author, Sue Monk Kidd, put the quote, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first location her circle of attendants", at the beginning to start you off with something symbolizing what the chapter will be about. She keeps you hinting in the beginning and then you understand the quote at the end. The quote relates to the chapter because Lilly is just like the beekeeper, she is trying to find something which is her mother, the elusive queen.

ReplyDeleteHey alex vale i liked what you msaid about the guitar in your poem.
The author was trying to inform us with the epigraph at the begining on the chapter. IT helped us realize what was going to happen in the paragraph. the epigraph relates to the chapter in the fact that the girls had just broken out of jail. They are like the bee keepers searching for the queens attendants.

ReplyDeleteMaddie Wolbert,
Your blog was great! I loved the detailed description and the personification that you used. You really made the poem come alive by using imagery.
The quote about the beekeepers using the attendants to find the queen is describing Lily's life. As she is growing up, she is trying to find out more about her mother. She cannot get the information that she wants from her father, so August Boatwright helps her learn more about her mother, just like the beekeepers get to the queen with help from the attendants.
Zach Henson
ReplyDeleteSue Monk Kid starts the chapter with this quote because Lilly is trying to find the person who knew her mother. The quote s is a metaphor and hows that the queen (Lilly's mother) has attendents. The only way to find the true stories about her mother is to find the attendents.

ReplyDelete#1 Good job Matt Gilchrest on your prose poetry about the golf club.
#2 Sue Monk Kidd chose to start the chapter with this quote to illustrate the similarities that Lily has with the bees. The quote itself almost has a bit of personification in it that the bees although protecting the queen won't nesecerily be circled around the queen like they are her possè. The epigram relates to this chapter in that Lily (who is the "beekeeper" of the quote) sets out to find her queen bee to circle around who in this case are August Boatwright and her sisters who later on are able to help Lily figure out more about her mom before she died.

ReplyDeleteSue Monk Kidd goes on telling the story with a quote about the queen bee. Lily goes into town to buy food and other items for herself and Rosalina. Lily soon finds out that she can only buy food, and because Rosalina had a rough couple of days, Lily steals some snuff for her. As she is leaving, she notices the Black Mary on a honey jar. Lily knows that this is the place she needs to go to.

The author chose to use the epigram in chapter 3 to give a summary of the chapter, without giving the reader the whole plot. The epigram uses facts about bees to relate it to the chapter.
This epigram relates to the chapter because in the epigram it says that to locate the queen you need to locate her surroundings, so Lily is trying to find her mother by finding paths she has been such as the " black Mary".

2. "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57), is stated the beginning of chapter three. I think the author chose to start the chapter off with that because by comparing Lily to the bees it gives the reader an interesting view. Lily, the "new beekeeper" is trying to find her Mom's "circle of attendants." By doing this Lily will then be able to find the "Queen" (or information about her Mom).
Robert Romanelli
ReplyDelete1.) Spencer your paragraph is good. It is simple and to the point and also points out the use of rhyme schemes used.
2.)Th author chooses to begin the chapter with this quote because it's almost a summary of the chapter. This quote sets the tone for the chapter and begins the hunt for Lily's mother.

ReplyDeleteHey Spencer Tietjen! I really love you and how you said "The lamp in my house symbolizes me because it makes my day brighter and i make my families day brighter." You make my day brighter too. This was also good use of symbolizing light as something caring.
The quote about the bees is a symbolization of Lilly's life changing journey to close a gaping hole in her life. The author includes this epigram to develop the major theme of the book. She also uses it to lay out what will happen in the chapter by showing that Lilly will look for her mother's friends first to eventually "find" her mother.
Matt pourfakhrai I really enjoyed your paragraph on a fridge and how it said that it always provided and never ran out.

The quote "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" described the chapter completely. Lily came way from Silvan to find someone who might of known her mother. This leads to her finding the brand of honey with the black virgin Mary on the front. ReplyDeleteMatt Gilchrest, Your poem was pretty good, the idea of a golf club as a motivator is pretty good. Maybe I will try that one time.
Sue Monk Kidd chose to use this epigram for this chapter because it introduces the chapter and gives a little preview. In Chapter 3 Lily runs away with Rosaleen to Tiburon and Lily figures out that the black Mary picture is from a bottle of honey. She believes that this person making the honey knew Lily's mother. So the clues to find her mother are like the "attendants" and her mother is like the "queen".

ReplyDeleteJoey DePinto, I like how you used your bed and how you compared it to a fire on a cold day. Also I like the way you used literary devices in your description of Esperanza and the Four Skinny Trees and that way you comapred them each other.
I think the author chose this epigram because it shows how much the normal bees depend on the queen bees or in Lily's case her mother. The epigram relates to the chapter because Lily and Rosaleen run away to find the place where her mother once stayed. Also where the picture was taken there is a twenty-eight acre bee farm

2. Sue Monk Kidd chose to start this chapter with this message to forshadow Lily's search for her mother's history, and her own happiness.
This epigram states that in order to find a bee's queen, they must re-trace her past. This exactly what Lily is doing in this chapter; by going to city her mother wrote down, and the people she had in photographs.

2. The author decided to start the chapter with this message to describe how Lily and Rosaleen find August Boatwright, the place/town that was on the back of the picture of the black Mary.
The message relates to this chapter because when Lily takes the map and reads the back of the picture of Mary it says the name of the town where Lily's mother was when she ran away from T. Rsy. So lily decides to go there to find out more information about her mother.

Sue Monk Kidd starts this chapter with the epigram "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants"(Kidd 57) because it shows that Lily is on the hunt for her mother. In this chapter, Lily is searching for anyone who may have had any association with her mother. They would be the "circle of attendants". Lily's mother would be the "elusive queen" and Lily is hoping to find her through any connections her mother had with anyone in Tiburon.

2. The messages at the begining really just give an overview, using a fact about bees, for the chapter using different words.
The message at the begining of the chapter describes how Lily and Rosaleen leave T. Ray and about how the find August Boatwright. It practically describes there journey to find where her mother had gone when she left. So Lily could learn more about her.

ReplyDeleteBlake McIntyre:
Blake, you are very right about Cisneros using personification and rhyme in "Four Skinny Trees." Also, your poem is great. You used a good variety of words such as engulf and also went back to how the flower related to your life at school.
Sue Monk Kidd used this important epigram to hint that soon Lilly and Rosaleen might find Deborah, Lilly's mother. Lilly's mother is used in comparison as the queen by saying "the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57). Lilly and Rosaleen, the new beekeepers are on the way to Tiburon, and will soon find her circle of attendants, which are the people Deborah knew when she was alive. So after all, the epigram is used for foreshadowing.

I liked the paragraph you wrote about your tan curtains. You put thought and detail into what you wrote.
2.) The author chose to begin Ch. 3 with this quote because it means that you can find out about someone inportant by learning from the people that were a part of their life. In the Secret Life of Bees, Lily is trying to learn more about her mother who has died. Lily travels to Tiburon to meet with August and her family. She felt that tthey could help her figure out who her mom was.

Hey Chloe,
ReplyDeleteI like the way you use the flashlight and relate it to the different ways we can use it and its complex ways of lighting things.
Sue starts the chapter with this quote because it helps the reader understand that you can learn more about a person through talking with the people that person knew.Because Lily's mom is gone and she can no longer talk to her, she has to depend on the people that her mom knew to help her bring the past to life. Lily and Rosaleen leave their hometown and flee to Turbon in search for the "circle of attendents" or to Lily, people her mother knew. Lily is trying hard to trace back her mom's past and know what really happened.

In order to do this Lily uses her mother's picture of the black virgin and travels to the city, Tiburon, written on the back of the photo in hopes that when she reaches Tiburon she will find people that may have known her mother. Therefore, Lily symbolizes "the new beekeepers" in search of "attendants" in which she meets August Boatwright whom will lead her to her "queen".

ReplyDelete1. Madison Hayes- I really like how you described your tan curtains! great job. You put so much detail into it!
2. The author put the message at the beginning of this chapter to say that if you look and try hard enough then you will find what you have been looking for.
In this chapter it describes how Lily and Rosaleen find August. Lily and Rosaleen go to Tiburon to find out who her mother had stayed with and to see if she can learn more about her dead mother.

ReplyDelete1. Kennedy Nyhoff, I really liked your poem and how you used all the poetic devices in the vignette to make it strong. Good Job!
2. The author chose to begin the chapter with the bee quote because it gives you a hint about what is going to happen in the chapter. It relates to the chapter because Lilly ran away from T. Ray and is trying to find out about her mother who has died. She made her way to August's house and she thinks she can get information about her mother from them.

Rachel Lemme,
Your poem about your camera was amazing. I really liked how you talked about capturing a moment. I could tell that you wrote it because it sounded like you. Great Job!
The epigram in chapter 3 explains how Lily feels about her mother, and her longing to know what kind of woman she really was. Just like the bees find their queen by "locating her circle of attendants" Lily travels to Tiburon, South Carolina in hope of finding someone that once knew her mother(Kidd 57). Lily knows that if she can find someone that once knew her, then she has a better chance of discovering who the woman she loves so much was.

Matthew Pourfakhrai,
I really enjoyed your poem about your fridge. I thought it was very well put together and completly true.
The author chose this quote to begin chapter 3 to show how Lily is similar to the bees, how they depend on the queen like Lily depends on her mother. This relates to the chapter becuase Lily runs away to find a place where her mother used to live. She then finds someone who may have known her mother, possibly finding a potential "circle of attendants".

ReplyDelete1. Alex Vale, I like your poem because it is short and has rhyme in it.
2. Sue Monk Kidd starts this chapter foreshadowing the search for Lily's mothers history, with an epigram. "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants". This quote made Lilly's life show exactly how she is just like the bees and it lets you think how the epigram and the rest of the chapter are linked.
Rachel Lemme
ReplyDeleteGood job Madison Hayes! I love the way you applied the tan curtains to symbolize your parents! The Literary elements you used were amazing!
I believe Sue Monk Kidd decided to use this Epigram to show that its not always easy to search for something on your own. Sometimes you need to have help to find something rather than doing it on your own. This epigram relates to chapters 3-4 because Lily needs to travel to Tiburon South Carolina to find out where the picture of Mary came from. She runs into August Boatwrite who represents the "attendeants" in the epigram.

ReplyDeleteTayler Feldotto! I loved the way you described the old blue car! Your diction was great!
In The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd started the third chapter with the quote about having to find the attendents, because she is showing that in order for Lily to truly find her mom, she must interact with her mom's friends and people from her past. In chapter three, Lily arrives to August's house, thinking that she had some relation to her mom. The quote kind of foreshadows that August and her family are the so called "attendents".

ReplyDelete1). Amy J,
I really like your prose poetry about your camera! You made me want to go and take pictures! It was so amazing how you could connect with your camera!
2). Sue Monk Kidd begins Chapter 3 with the epigram, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants," because she is explaining the theory of the bees, which is the way she is going to find the information of her mother.
The epigram relates to the chapter because Lily travels to Tiburon, South Carolina to find the history of her mother. Lily is like a new beekeeper who has to find the, "elusive queen," which in this case is her mother, but in order to do so, she has to find the, "circle of attendants," or the people who used to be in her mother's life.
Jeff Imam
ReplyDeleteBlake McIntyre, your poem on the flower that didn't blend in really connected with me. Maybe I will live like this from now on.
1. The author chooses to begin the chapters with epigrams believing that the reader will keep in mind the epigram, connecting it to the story as they read.
2. The epigram relates to the chapter because the chapter is about the protagonist searching for her mother's "attendants", who she believes will lead her to the elusive "queen bee", which could help her figure out who her mom truly was.

I liked both of your poems a lot. I could relate to the same feelings and emotions you both expressed in your poems. I worte about baseball as well and we all touched on a lot of the same points, so I really got into both of the poems.
In chapter 3 Lily is trying to find her way to her new home or a bees new nest. Lily's plan is to find people that knew her mom and go from there just like a bee must find a "circle of attendace" for the queen. The author shows that people find there new homes the same way bees do in certain situations such as Lily's.
1. Hey Madison! I like how you used tan curtains to symbolize your parents and their role in your life. Great Job!
ReplyDelete2. Sue Monk Kidd chose the qoute "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first location her circle of attendents" to start off Chapter Three. She did this because in this chapter, Lilly has ran away with Rosaleen, first off to escape her dad, and secondly to learn more about her mother. Lilly's Mother is like the queen bee in the qoute. If Lilly wants to learn more about her mom, she is going to have to start looking at the elements that were once apart of her mother's everyday life. By doing this, hopefully it will lead Lilly to more facts about her mother and the short life she lived.

1. Kelly! I loved your poem and how you use animals in your poem instead of just an item! You made the poem all your own. Good job!
2. The author, Sue Monk Kid, chose to begin chapter 3 with that quote because it shows that by knowing someone you can find out little things that you didn't know before. The epigram also could represent foreshadowing for Lily's journey when she ran away to Tiburon, for how she is going to meet new people along her way.
Madison Wolbert,
ReplyDeleteI loved how you described plastic fruit,I never thought about it that way. I loved how creative it was.
I believe the author, Sue Kidd chose to write the epigram "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57) at the beginning of chapter three because it relates to what exactly is going on in Lily's life throughout the chapter. "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57) relates to Lily's life by her trying to figure out every hint that can lead her to finding out what her mom was like and the details of her life. “By first locating her circle of attendants” relates to Lily by how she is trying to find the details and the hints of what her mother's character.

Joey D. I really like your example of personification. Very descriptive!
ReplyDeleteSue Monk choose to begin the epigram with this quote to describe her search for her mother. In this case lily would be the bee keeper searching for her mother who is the queen. So now she must find people who has information about her mother which would be the queen bees attendants.
Trey Harless
Dalton Roberts, P. 7
ReplyDeleteChris Turner,
Your poem on the last blog was great. I liked how you used personification by saying the baseball felt pain and emotion.
At the beginning of chapter three the author chose to use a quote to symbolize lily as and bee and what she is going to do. This quote relates to this chapter because Lily has been given a clue about her mother, which is the "Black Mary" picture, and must find where it came from. One may say she is "first locating her circle of attendants." Her mothers circle of attendants.
1) Hey Robert, good job finding the literary elements.
ReplyDelete2) I believe the epigram, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" was put at the start of the chapter to communicate how the queen bee is always found with a group of other bees. It also shows the hard it is to spot the queen bee due to the word 'elusive' being in the text. The beekeepers were even hinted at not knowing where the queen bee was at the start.
Hi Katy Song,
ReplyDeleteGood job on your poem! I like the way you used the 5 fences boards standing together as a team because we stand stronger in unity.

2.) Sue Monk Kidd starts this chapter with the epigram "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants"(Kidd 57) because it represents Lillys search for her mother. Lily's mother would be the "elusive queen". In this chapter, Lily is searching "The Black Mary" that she sees on a necklace that was once her mothers, or any other people that may know of her mother. They would be the "circle of attendants".
Hunter Graviett
ReplyDeleteNathan Riedel I like your poem on the clock, the rhyme gives more meaning to it allowing me to understand what you are trying to tell us. Good work and keep doing a good job.
In the third chapter of "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd the quote foreshadows what is going to happen throughout the chapter and the rest of the book. The "elusive queen" is her mother that she is trying to find more information about. She has to gather this information by talking to people that knew her on the way to Tiburon. Also known as the "circle of attendants." Lily is the new "Bee Keeper" trying to find the "honey" or information on her mom and she has to do that by asking the "circle of attendants" the people that knew her, so she can find the "elusive queen" the biggest amount of information about her dead mother. That is why Sue Monk Kidd wrote the epigram at the beginning of chapter three.
Colin Whitt
ReplyDelete1.) Hey Katy I loved your poem! I liked the way it symbolized strength and unity between the five fence posts standing mighty and tall together as one whole.
2.) I believe the author chose to start chapter 3 with thisquote because she wanted an adventure for Lily, to find someone that knew her mother, and uses them as a key to the treasure chest of finding out more information about her mother.
Colin Kuzdak
ReplyDelete1.)Katy Song...
The poem you wrote sounded very rich a well thought out.
2.)The quote means that a good way to learn something about a person is to look at the people around them and see what they are like. I think this means that she should find someone who really knew her mother.

Jack makes his comment different from all of the others by explaining how the trees relate to Esperanza. He also shows how she believes that she and the trees are both misunderstood. He finishes with the stating of how Cisneros believes how her and the tree are both not entirely phisically beautiful but are both mentally strong.
#2 The author uses the epigram to shine some light into the ways bees behave and also show some foreshadowing of the chapter. I believe that the epigram is saying that to find what you are looking for you have take in your surroundings. This proves appropriate when Lily runs away and finds a new home.
Bailey Farmer
ReplyDelete1. Teala! I enjoyed your poem about running on the track! I can relate to it and everything you said is what every runner feels on that track. You last sentence was motivation and inspiring!
2. The author chose to began this chapter with this quote because Lily is determined to go and find black Mary, in her mother's picture. The quote means you can find the person you want if you starts at the roots and know who every little or big person in their life. The epigram relates to the chapters because Lily and Rosaleen travel to Tiburon to find roots of her mothers past. Lily discovers the lady on the honey jar is just like black Mary in her mother's photograph. She then finds August, the girl who makes the honey, in hope that she will find answers about her mother's past.

ReplyDeleteHey Emily G. I absolutely loved you poem. You did an awesome job with descriptive words and details.
I believe the author, Sue Monk Kidd chose to begin with the quote, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first location her circle of attendants," because it shows that one must search for the reward or prize. You can find out about someone by learning from the people that were apart of her life. Lily has come all the way from Silvan to find someone who might of known her mother this all leads to her finding the brand of honey with the black virgin Mary on the front. All of this relates to the quote because it shows how Lily, the "new beekeeper," has to hunt for some more information on her mother, who is the "elusive queen." She had the need to find out exactly who her mom was.
Daniel Scandura
ReplyDelete1.) Ryan, your summarization was awesome.
I like your way to go into deep detail
2.) The author decided to use this quote for chapter three to symbolize lily's purpose in this chapter. Lily needs to find the real reason about her mother’s death and where better to look then the people that were close to her. The quote gives out the same message and that is why I believe the author has picked this quote.
Hey Zach Henson I really like the analysis of the poem and yours is creative too.

Lily conducts her searches by finding those who were close to her desired search like that of T Ray and her mother.

2: Kidd uses the epigram in chapter 3 of The Secret Life Of Bees to foreshadow what the main character, Lily, has to do. In chapter 3, Sue uses the 'queen bee' to demonstrate Lily's mother. So in order to find her mother, Lily must find her mothers 'circle of attendants.' Which are the calender sisters.

1) Darcy Mauk: Your poem was great! It had good flow and the rhythm was good!

2) By starting the chapter with this quote, the author hints a little foreshadowing on what’s going to happen in the following chapter. In the previous chapters, the quotes at the beginning relate and symbolize what’s happens in that same chapter. The epigram at the beginning of chapter three relates to the chapter because it talks about how you will find the queen bee where ever you find all of the other bees. In this situation, I think that Lily, June, Rosaleen, May, and other people who work for August are the bees that follow. The queen bee would be August because she’s the one who runs the honey production and determines what life is like in the household.

Chapter 3 of the novel starts with a epigram that reads, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57). The author uses this epigram for this chapter becaue Lily is a bee looking for her "queen" which is her mother. She is trying to find information about her. She does indeed learn about her a little bit but she wants all the details. Lily, goes on an adventure with Rosaleen to discover the truth about her mother.

I like how you chose to talk about problems kids face and addressed those situations as wrong, and that kids should realise what the put themselves into.
The epigram of chapter three, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants," relates to Lily and her finding her mother. Her mother represents the queen bee and her friends are the circle of attendants. So Lily starts by looking for the people who were in her mother's life. When she finds out where they are she goes to them, advancing in her search.

Hey madison hayes, I really like your prose poem of your curtains. I thought it was very interesting how you did the opposite of your curtains.
Mack Morgan
ReplyDeleteHey Kenny, thought your response was a great one and you wrote it well.
The queen bee is easy to spot because of the circle of attendants around it. It always has attendants around the queen because the queen bee is the most important and leader in the hive. Su Monk Kidd started this chapter very well with a well written epigram.

ReplyDeleteHi Brittaney McCassin! I really thought you did a great job on your creative, well written poem. I liked the way you used your key words, descriptive words and phrases to flow into your poem that you wrote about your specific object. Keep up the good work!
The author, Sue Monk Kidd chose this sentence to show the audience before reading chapter 3 that the queen is the main bee in the hive. She fights her way through males that stop her, and has the power to be willing to change that. The epigram relates to chapter 3 by showing Rosaleen fighting for the right or Act for blacks to have freedom. She fights her way through men that have been beaten and attacked her and she ends up in a hospital. After that Rosaleen and Lily continue their journey and keep exploring throughout the novel. This also relates to chapter 3 because the bee is going to do whatever she can do in her power and her will to fight for what is right, and never giving up.

Hi Madison WOlbert. I loved your poem. it was very good and creative! Good Job!
I believe the author, Sue Monk Kidd, chose this epigram to start this chapter because she was trying to show before hand that the queen bee controls the hive and is the main bee. I think that the author was trying to show that to find the queen of the area, you must first find the ones who live, work and reside with her. The epigram is related to the book, when Lilly is trying to find a way to get to August. She is trying to find someone that knows her and know a way to find her. The bee has the same kind of determination to do whatever he can to find exactly what the worker bee needs to satisfy the queen.
The epigram in the beginning of chapter 3 is describing that if you look for something you may find it but it will not come to you if you do not work for it. Lily has made a long journey to find someone who knows her mother. If she had not searched, she would not have found what is a "new family" to her.
