Happy Wednesday!

I've had a few questions about Blog assignment #3 so I thought I would clarify --

I will try my hardest to check emails and approve posts as frequently as possibile, but I am not able to approve those instantly. I am anticipating multiple comments on any one question proposed -- and that is going to be perfectly fine. It's not a perfect system, but I do like the opportunities you are receiving to create and answer thought-provoking questions. Although I am sad that many of you are writing fantastic questions that will not be answered by fellow students, I am hopeful that some of these can be used as discussion starters in class.

Have a fantastic day!

Blog Assignment #3

Back (by popular demand - right?) with no further technical difficulties in sight is your next blogging opportunity! We are going to do things a little differently this time around. Read your directions carefully.

1. At the end of this post, I will ask a discussion question. The first individual to respond to this post will cut and paste that question into their comment box.

2. Then the student will answer that question very thoroughly using examples from their own life and examples in the novel.

3. Finally, the student is responsible for writing a different discussion question at the bottom of their comment box. Use your knowledge of The SLB through Ch.13 to ask your question. Also, use your notes on the characteristics of discussion questions and the example below to help you form a quality question. You will be graded on your response and your question. Read the previous questions to ensure that your question is original.
4. All students will read this post and all the comments made in response. Students will only answer the last discussion question in the line of comments. Answer only the LAST QUESTION posted in the COMMENTS. Students must follow directions to receive credit.

5. Enjoy!

QUESTION for the first student to respond:

Sue Monk Kidd takes several pages at the end of Chapter 13 to describe the moment Lily sees the picture of herself as a baby with her mother tenderly feeding her. Lily believes that May "must've made it to heaven" and told Deborah Fontanel Owens that her daughter was in need of a sign to "let [Lily] know [she] was loved" (Kidd 276). Do you believe in "signs" that send messages of comfort or warning or maybe even messages that help you make the right decision?

Reminders

1. Vocabulary Test -- May 18th and 19th

2. Bring Cans -- 5 per student

3. Look momentarily for the Blog Assignment #3

Have a wonderful day!

Blog Assignment #2

WOW! When did you kids become such amazing literary analysts and poets? I'm impressed! I'm actually so impressed that I really think we should take a moment to read some of the comments made by your friends. Let's make that part of Blog Assignment #2. Here you go...

#1. First, choose one or two comments from the previous blog assignment. Write the author(s) of that comment a note -- a positive, classroom-appropriate note -- such as:

Hi Suzy Q! I really enjoyed your poem! I like the creative way you used your dinner table to symbolically represent the strong relationship you have with your family.

#2. The Secret Life of Bees Chapter 3: The epigram at the beginning of Chapter 3 reads, "New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants" (Kidd 57). After reading the chapter, write 3-4 well-developed sentences explaining your answer to the following questions:

Why does the author choose to begin the chapter with this message?
How does the epigram relate to the chapter?

Note: I urge you, again, to view this blog as a virtual classroom. Diction, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and development of ideas should be considered carefully for this academic forum. Points will be deducted for an absence of these conventions.

Type up your response for both #1 and #2 in a ONE comment to this post (no need for separate comments). Do not forget to include your first and last name!

Happy Blogging!

Happy TAKS Day!

Look for the next blog assignment to be posted within the next few hours. I know some of you high-achievers have already been looking. I'm working on reading comments from the first assignment and will post the second assignment momentarily.

Have a great day!

Okay students --
Here is your first blog assignment.
1. Reread "Four Skinny Trees" from Sandra Cisneros' novel The House on Mango Street. Identify the elements of prose poetry, or poetry that appears like a paragraph but reads like poetry due to the poetic devices used. You should look for personification, symbolism, rhyme (end rythm and internal rhyme), rhythm, repetition and alliteration.
2. Write your analysis in paragraph form.
3. Then, write your own prose poetry. Just as Esperanza chose four familiar trees in her front yard and delevoped their symbolism within the poem, you will also choose familiar objects around your home that have a symbolic relevence. Use the same poetic devices found in "Four Skinny Trees."
4. You will submit your analysis paragraph and your poem as a comment to this blog. VERY IMPORTANT: This is an academic forum. Correct grammar conventions, including proper capitalization, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure, are REQUIRED. Proofread before submitting.
5. Make sure your first and last name are included in your comment.
Yeah! I'm so very excited to introduce a classroom blog. We will use this space as a forum for class discussion and communication. All my students and parents are welcome!
